Día 43 / Day 43

Moscow, September 27th 2010, American Express Travelers Checks.

This is a service to the community, in fact a service to the traveler. If you are going to travel for 90 days you will have a problem with the amount of money to carry and how to carry, and it’s possible that before the trip you visit to your friendly bank to ask for an extension on the withdraw limit for your credit card or maybe put some bills on automatic debit in order to avoid late punishments, and the representative of your friendly bank tell you “do you want to buy some American Express Travelers Checks? Those are really good and they have a refund service in case of lost or robbery, you can change it in the entire world…”, then I thought that was a good idea to carry half in cash and half in checks. I’m in the middle of the trip more or less and I have some cash luckily but just to be cautious I thought will be a good idea to change some of them here in Moscow because it’s an important city and not to do it in Omsk for example because this one is a small town. I spend 5 hours trying to change this beautiful checks, and I didn’t change some, I changed all of them, I visited more than 10 different banks, I called two times to Buenos Aires to ask for directions and why nobody accept this kind of checks here. They charged me 2% of commission and they asked 70 different things in Russian, of course, like for example who is the Banco Frances??? (a local bank in Argentina). Lucky me after change these beautiful checks I went to Izmailovsky market and this visit bring me light to this day. Bottom line, before buying these beautiful checks take care about the destination of your trip because not every country has the same service and you can lose a whole day of your trip doing this.
